Live Kind Choose Happiness Unleash Learning
What we have been up to…
Math: Students worked on decimal place value and comparing decimals. We had a quiz on Wednesday. Students have this quiz in their binders unless they were absent last week…may need more time to complete. If your child received a 75% or lower on this quiz, I will be working with them on Monday during part of his/her recess. These students may take a retake on Tuesday. On Friday, we have started rounding of whole numbers. This will continue next week as well. Make sure to ask your child about Number Talks…98 + 98 (the KFC problem) or…74 + 28 (the Walmart problem).
Reading: “Do you speak book?” We read the book, BOOK by George Ella Lyon and focused on the message the author was sharing about what was written. We had many wonderful thoughts to share about our beliefs about books. The responses are hanging in the hallway by our door to enjoy.
We are building on the foundation that thoughtful feedback can help us grow as learners. We created a rubric that we can use when writing reading responses so that we know our expectations, and know what success looks like. We used our rubric to offer feedback on our shared writing. Next week we will use the rubric on our individual reading responses.
We continued reading The One and Only Ivan. Ask your child to share with you about Ivan.
Science: We discovered the impact too many variables can have on an experiment during our investigation of “How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop?” We are discussing the steps of thedesign process, the importance of conducting more than one trial, and how to use data to formulate a conclusion.
Social Studies: Our class watched a kid appropriate video on 911 and had a discussion about Patriot Day. I was impressed with the maturity and empathy the classes displayed during this lesson. Your child received an assignment on Monday where I would like them to research (if not already known) where their name originated. Kids were given a paper about the guidelines for this and it is not limited to friendly letter format. I told them to be creativeJ Any help would be great!
Word Study: We had our first spelling test. These should be returned to the students on Monday of next week. It will be normal routine for us to have a pretest on Monday and words should come home that day. Parent activity will be assigned on Monday for homework (choose 1) and S.O.S. (choose 1) on Tuesday evening. Tests will be on Fridays. Thanks for any support on these skills.
